I began rockclimbing when I was 15, and the sport quickly became my passion. I climbed actively, with first ascents on cliffs in 3 states.
When a student at the Australian National University I expanded into mountaineering, spending three summers in New Zealand's Southern Alps. In 1978 I joined the ANU Mountainering Club's expedition to Dunagiri in the Indian Himalaya.
From 1979 onwards I worked as an adventure guide/instructor and professional mountaineer -- making guided ascents in Bolivia, in Nepal (Mera Peak, Island Peak and others), and in Antarctica, (Mt Scott and several first ascents of un-named peaks).
My major climbs are listed below.
2006 Summitted Mt Everest (8848m) via North Ridge
1999 Australia/American expedition to Makalu, the world’s fifth highest peak
1993 Film expedition "The Ice Capped Jungle" Ascent of Carsentsz Pyramid, Irian Jaya, via what is now known locally as the Hall Route.
1988 First ascent of Antarctica’s remote Mt Minto.
1984 First Australian ascent of Mount Everest, via new route without oxygen, (I climbed to within 500m of summit as part of our 5 man team).
1984 First winter ski trip to source of the Ganges, Indian Himalaya.
1983 First ascent of largest unclimbed face in the Himalaya, the South Face of Annapurna II (7963m)
1982 Trisul (7000m), Indian Himalaya. I was one of 3 guides on this expedition where we were turned back from our high camp by a 3-day blizzard.
1981 Leader of Australia-China Mountaineering Expedition, new route on Mt Anyemaqen.
1981 In Nepal's Everest region, the 3rd Ascent of Ama Dablam's North Ridge, via a new variant start.
1980 Alpamayo, Artesonraju and Kitaraju in the Corderilla Blanca, Peruvian Andes
1979 Ali Ratna Tibba and other climbs in the Manikaren Spires area of the Indian Himalaya.
1978 Dunagiri (7023m) in the Garhwal Himal of India
1975-78 Alpine climbing in New Zealand, including 6 routes on Mt Cook, ascents of Mt Tasman, Mt Hicks, Malte Brun, and many smaller peaks.
