Douglas Mawson: The Life of an Explorer
When asked to write the life of Sir Douglas Mawson from an adventurer's perspective, I felt very daunted, as Sir Douglas is a great figure in Australia's history. But once I began work I was swept away by the energy of his vision, and I believe I have captured this energy in the book.
The book is a pictorial biography, and one of its great strengths is the variety of photos that my wife, Barbara Scanlan, was able to unearth as researcher, and another strenght is the extended captions we were able to give to the photos. It was also a pleasure to work with the great photography of Frank Hurley.
