DEAD LUCKY

The Himalayan cycle continues – winter, pre-monsoon climbing season, monsoon, post-monsoon climbing season, and winter again. Every pre-monsoon season climbers continue to flock to Everest, but thankfully the death toll remains much less than during the 2006 season when I looked like being the 12th and final fatality.

Meanwhile, DEAD LUCKY continues to sell well in Australia. With good sales of the North American hard cover as well, my New York publisher Tarcher/Penguin is releasing a soft cover edition in May 2009 (click the U.S. Book Tour button for an overview of my American tour in May/June 2008, and check out my hugely successful Sacramento presentation by clicking the Video Clips button). The cover shown here is of the smaller second edition, released in Australia and New Zealand in July 2008.

The German edition, TOTGESAGT, MEIN UBERLEBENSKAMPF AM EVEREST, was the bestselling new release for the fall quarter (autumn; September-November) for Piper Verlag, my Munich-based publisher. I was very pleased to hear this news, as Piper Verlag publish around 200 titles per year.

Dead Lucky's younger offspring ALIVE IN THE DEATH ZONE won the Eve Pownall Award for Information Books at the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Awards 2009. The awards were presented in August by the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Penelope Wensley. The book has sold very well since it's release in November 2008. I am particularly pleased about the book's success because it fosters a sense of adventure among children and teenagers.
