In these changing times, companies are facing new challenges as well as familiar ones like take-overs, fierce new competitors and evolving markets. The solutions to these problems may involve a company taking a radically different approach to its business, drastically decreasing staff numbers or, conversely, deciding it has to be a bigger player. In all cases, the key to success is not only being able to visualise a solution but also having the people to make it happen. This is where human resource development steps in, teaching old dogs new tricks, showing new dogs the same new tricks, and making sure that channels of trust and communication are established.
For me, it was an easy step from instructing outdoor skills to enthusiasts to sharing these same skills with corporate clients. It was a much bigger step to take the outdoor arena that I knew so well and make it classroom not so much for abseiling, but more for the letting go of old ways and fixed ideas so that the participants could feel freed, empowered and motivated to achieve their company's mission. I get a great deal of satisfaction from helping people and organisations to achieve these goals.
I work with Adventure West and have a photo gallery from some of our programs. The mental challenges and achievements - the important outcomes - are much harder to show.
Keynote and Motivational Speaking
I use presentations about my expeditions to the Himalaya, Antarctica and elsewhere to highlight key issues in team-building, motivation, leadership and management - depending on the needs of my client. My work in human resource development has helped me understand the pressures and demands facing huge corporations, defence forces, as well as schools and small to medium-sized enterprises.
